What does Fathers day mean? 6/9/2007 10:56:20 AM
I am a dad. I am a grandfather. One of you posted a writing last week saying that most fathers are disappointed with their father’s day gifts. I don’t quite understand that. When my son was born that was a gift. When he gave me my first Fathers Day gift it was a stick figure which almost resembled a man. I loved it. Why? Because he drew it just for me. It was my portrait. I did not care if it was or was not a likeness of me. I liked it because my little boy drew it. My daughters went pretty much the same route. What was I supposed to think? Gee, they didn’t get me a plasma TV. Well of course not. They were not making them yet.
My grandchildren are doing the same. Pictures of dogs that look somewhat like a sheep or something but it is a gift of love.
Oh, there is the key word. Love! They give me love. They have given me someone to love. An extension of the love shared by my wife and me and now my kids and my grandchildren’s. It does not get any better than that. When I was a kid I wanted things for Christmas that my parents simply could not afford. They did give me what they could. Chief among this is L.O.V.E.! Any father who does not simply enjoy the fact that they got something, even if it’s only a card that says something sweet about dear old dad is just simply looking over life’s blessings and dwelling on negative ideas.
My Fathers day gift every Fathers day is being eligible to be the one who is honored. Don’t ask for more. That is enough.
