As I have done to others. 7/9/2007 11:19:01 AM
I think any man who is truly honest with himself looks back on his life when he reaches a certain point he says to himself, “If only I had not done that,” or “Oh, I should have done that.” What I am saying is we are all human. We all make mistakes. The hardest thing for me to do when I was a young man was to admit that I made mistakes. Some never outgrow that. Some will spend their older years trying to justify their younger years. Some think that admitting I could be wrong or I made a mistake is a show of weakness when in fact it is truly a show of strength.
“I’m sorry,” is sometimes the hardest word for any of us; man or woman to utter. We want to be respected but we do not always respect others. We want no one to step on our rights but we often become oblivious to the fact that we many times step on theirs.
I know that I feel a special kind of pride when I do something considerate for somebody but the problem is I never take myself to task for the fact that for every good deed I have done I have most likely simply turned my head and not even tried for a dozen others.
You might say this is the only way to keep your sanity. After, all; if you spent your whole life trying to please everyone you would go crazy yourself. This is true but sometimes it’s the little things we fail to do. If you’re driving along a busy shopping area and you see someone who has been sitting at an outlet waiting for a chance to get into the lane of traffic would it be a really terrible chore to stop and let him out in front of you.
You may say, “That’s fine. He will see me as a champion but the cars behind me will feel put out because I have slowed down traffic even more by letting him out.”
This may be true but just the same it has not created that much of a burden for them. They are already in the lane of traffic.
This is just one example. How many husbands really take the time to help their wives clean up the dishes after dinner? It can be a time of conversation for both. I help my wife when I can and she helps me. This is just one more example.
I’m not really talking about big things here but the little things we do or do not do that can sometimes cause more pain to those we love. The novels I have written were inspired by this basic need for communication. I realize that I may have found myself caught up in extremes but the true moral is when we do something which we should do we do it for ourselves and those around us, especially our loved ones. Likewise, when we fail to do and say things we really should, we hurt not only ourselves but those same people.
Say, “I love you to your wife or husband.” Say it for no apparent reason other than the fact that you do. Love is easy but if you do not express it you may find it fading away.
If you have a flower garden you water it or the beautiful roses die. If you have love you water that too to keep it alive. At any rate that is one mans opinion.
God Bless,
