The heritage of family passes through the generations It's been a difficult week with the loss of my grandfather. I have been to his funeral, seen family members I haven't seen in years, and spent the last few days going through my grandfather's home for items of furniture I may enjoy. Actually, there were a few pieces that meant quite a bit to me, especially the matching chest to a mahoganey bureau I already have.
All of this brings to mind the concept of heritage. I love the fact that I grew up with heritage all around me. Bus was a second generation Houstonian; I am fourth generation, and I have a sixth generation grandson. I certainly grew up with Texas history crammed down my throat and that is well to be bragged about. Texas has been its own republic and can stand on its own history. I'm thankful for the grandparents who made me so aware of this. I, in turn, try to take my place with this in my own family and even with my piano students.
It's sad that we in America are losing so much of the ideal American family heritage that this nation was founded on. Generations lived together and helped raise up families. They learned from each other and communities were formed around those integral families. Now, we communicate through computers, families are more easily broken and shattered. We easily move across the nation and children can grow up with little acess to one parent. It grieves me to see how our sense of heritage has fallen by the wayside.
I am thankful for Bus and his first wife, my grandmother, who gave me this tremendous sense of heritage in my family. And every time I see some of this furniture in my home, I will think not only of them, but of the wonderful heritage I have gained, the long line I come from, and I will endeavor to passs it on.
