Reflections on family customs and heritage I lost Bus today. My thoughts stated to Eric at lunch were, "Everybody needs a grandfather." I'm lucky I have had one who was so integrated into my life. Among many other things, Bus gave me my sweet tooth, my love for books, and hopefully some ability to tell a story although I'm still working on that one. I depend on the Spirit's movement, inspiration, more than any ability to tell a yarn.
Most of all, Bus gave me that wonderful Houston heritage I brag about so much. His mother was born here, then he, my mother, me, both my children. And now I have a grandson who is sixth generation Houstonian. Wow. That is rare indeed. I have certainly seen the city change immensely and heard even more stories about it. The value of story telling is a wonderful treasure. In days of ancient civilization, heritage lore and custom could only be passed on through family dialogue. Even today, we lose a certain sense of our history without those stories passed through the generations.
Fortuneately, my extended family circulated all my life around this city of Houston. I may have lived in California, New England, Paris, France, and various places. But home was always Houston, Texas, and the family traditions circulated there. Thankfully, the family stayed united through these gatherings. I know that I have been blessed through these situations. I can only endeavor to take that blessing out to others in the same manner in which it was given to me, freely and warmly.
