Ike is headed toward me. 9/12/2008 7:12:19 AM

I'm in Tomball twenty miles northwest of Houston, and the eye of the storm is headed straight up this path. I may not be in Galveston, but I'm certainly affected by the winds and rains, the hurricane levels of this storm. And Tomball is tornado territory.
I'm remembering several things today as I watch the clouds gathering outside. I'm remembering Alicia, the devastating hurricane that I lived through in Houston. I was pregnant with my second child at the time, and we went many weeks without power after the storm went through. When Tropical Storm Allison went through that same neighborhood just a few years ago, my old house, which thankfully I had sold, was flooded completely. Thankfully, Tomball is on much higher ground.
I'm still in territory of high wind damage, and there is much pine tree territory right outside my window. I'm thinking of relaxing techniques, breathing techniques, as the activity of the storm starts picking up. I don't doubt that we will lose power for awhile, but Tomball is pretty good about getting things up and running pretty quickly. I do feel much safer being in Tomball than when I was in the big city down south.
The eye is expected to go right over this territory, and the trees can go flying. That's a concern. I consider that nothing I have is worth as much as my safety in the Lord. He is my full safety net, my ultimate Rock. And if in the worst scenario, trees break my side porch window and fall on my prized piano, I will remeber that God allowed me to have it in the first place, and I am happy for that. The time He allows me to have something is a treasure. He gives me grace for whatever comes in my path.
Now that's not an easy thing to say. And hard experiences have come behind all that. Ultimately, it's wisdom and the Spirit of the Lord that revealed all that to me. I am thankful that I can rest in whatever may happen. Sure, I'll worry when the wind starts howling just outside my bedroom window, and I'll be thankful that my husband is right there at my side. Yet, ultimately, it's the Lord that gives me my total rest. On Him I stand.
