Life is Good in Tomball, Texas 7/13/2008 12:39:44 PM
What heaven. I do believe I've got a piece of heaven here in Tomball. Did ya read "Why I Fell In Love With Tomball?" - I need to do a sequel to it after seeing what I did yesterday.
I arose early to walk off the heavy dinner I had had the evening before. I know a nice little nature park just around the corner --- a few blocks over --- from where we live. I at least waited for the sun to come up, and was then out the door to do my exercising before the humitidity could have a chance.
The wonder of it all is that I caught glimpse of a red-tailed fox sitting on the train tracks just on the other side of the fence separating the park from the tracks and the woods just beyond. He looked up, caught one sight of me, and was gone before another blink could be had! It was that fast. But I had time to see him and that thick bushy tail of his. It was no cat, and I didn't doubt that thick red bushy tail. It was a slick red fox. (I did catch sight of a black cat much later on that was much, much smaller.)
It's not the first fox I've seen in Tomball. This one darted straight into the trees and into the woods that outline the train tracks that Tomball is known for. Tomball built its township on those train tracks.
I've seen another fox coming up a long winding road on the east side of town just outside of town. This one was preying in a ditch for some sort of appetite pleasure. But just as sure as my car rounded the bend, off he split. But I will never forget his tail nor his face and head. The color is one that is simply splendid, espcially when one is from the city and all urban customs.
I got to talking about that second fox yesterday as I visited store clerks. "Oh sure!" recanted one clerk. "My dog nearly got killed going after a fox." I believe she told me the dog won in the longrun.
Now, back to my main story. I may have been watching that fox - just for a split second - but there on the other side of the park, across the street and in a lea, was a deer family casually taking their morning meal as the dew half covered them as it arose. What heaven it was to me to take that two mile hike while watching the deer who did not mind me at all, and while I contemplated that fox. All the while, I was listening to cardinals and mockingbirds galore. And in the midst, church bells began to chime in the distance.
What heaven. I do believe I've got a piece of heaven here in Tomball. There were no other joggers, walkers, hikers on that path, and that was at 6:30 in the morning. I was perfectly safe with no thought at all of crime. Pine trees and nature all around me. This is why I moved to Tomball.
Every once in a while a train will come by, and the engineer and I wave to one another. Life is good in Tomball, Texas.
