The purpose of this blog is to provide updates on some of the cases I reported in my book (Fighting CPS: Guilty Until Proven Innocent of Child Protective Services Charges ISBN 9-780-9800061-6-2) that had not been resolved when the book went to press, and to report other cases where CPS is not working up to par. I’d also like to hear about cases in which Child Protective Services did the right thing so those cases can serve as examples of what should be done. More Odds and Ends:
My email box brought news from another set of grandparents in Texas. This Grandmother was given “temporary guardianship” through CPS in her county. She told me she was grateful that her grandchildren were with her and her husband rather than in foster care, even though she also said that she felt there was a good reason for them not to be with their parents. Still, she wondered if this was because of a shortage in foster homes, or the state’s way of “saving money.” She said, “I did talk to a supervisor once and she was rude, evasive, and clueless as to who I was even though she sat in on the planning meeting. I have been aware for years of the way CPS destroys families though I have never been involved with them [until now]. I was told by the caseworker that my grandkids ‘aren’t her usual CPS kids. They are so smart, high achievers in school, articulate and do know how to behave.’ It is the lack of action and communication [of CPS workers] that bothers me. Their word means nothing and they haven’t done what they told us they would at all.”
I advised this person that the squeaky wheel gets the grease and to squeak LOUDLY.
On the positive side, this sample from an Illinois group may be helpful to people out there. While these are from the front page and masthead of the June 2012 issue, there are newer posts on this site. I urge people to check out this organization if you live in Illinois and need help in the area of obtaining mental health treatment for foster or adopted children. Much can be learned from this group by other states.

IN RE RICO L.: FDC ARGUES IMPORTANT CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH CASE THAT NEARLY WENT UNHEARD
On June 21, 2012, the Illinois Appellate Court, First District, heard oral arguments in the Family Defense Center’s appeal on behalf of Bernadine L., a dedicated mother who lost custody to DCFS after her now 15-year-old son assaulted her on August 30, 2011. Bernadine adopted Rico after he was placed into her fos¬ter home at age 3. At age 5, he began to exhibit serious behavioral problems. Rico has been di¬agnosed with a long list of mental health and behavioral conditions that would challenge the most reasonable and caring of parents, including his own adoptive mother, Bernadine L.
Ordinarily, the juvenile court adjudicates cases involving abuse or neglect of children by their parents. But in Rico’s case, the court assumed jurisdiction over Rico through a “no fault depen-dency” petition filed in March 2010 after Rico had been psychiatrically hospitalized. At the time the petition was first filed, Bernadine had been told that her agreement to the filing of a juvenile court action for “no fault dependency” was nec¬essary in order to get Rico into treatment paid for by DCFS. Bernadine herself was never accused of abusing or neglecting Rico.
