The purpose of this blog is to provide updates on some of the cases I reported in my book (Fighting CPS: Guilty Until Proven Innocent of Child Protective Services Charges ISBN 9-780-9800061-6-2) that had not been resolved when the book went to press, and to report other cases where CPS is not working up to par. I’d also like to hear about cases in which Child Protective Services did the right thing so those cases can serve as examples of what should be done. It’s Not Just in Texas!

SUN LAKES, AZ - Valley families who are already working with Child Protective Services worry about when their cases will move forward as the department gives priority to reviewing thousands of overlooked cases.
Ada and Mike Edwards have been dealing with CPS for three years. They have been raising their niece's son, Logan, like he was their own since he was a toddler. They gained legal custody when he was two years old. The Edwards say the boy’s mother came back into the picture and wanted her son back so they complied. The couple was legally allowed weekend visits and they say it became clear to them he was not living in a good situation.
"He even got physically ill and said, 'I don't want to go back there, I don't want to go back there.' We would be like 'I’m so sorry Logan, but you have to,'" said Ada as she fought back her own tears. The couple says someone else called Child Protective Services which brought a police officer to the mother’s home and Logan was pulled from her care and sent to a foster home.
"Think about it, this child was removed from that home for a reason," Ada said.
The Edwards feel CPS has never done a proper follow up and believes case workers should’ve visited both homes to see which is safest for Logan. Ada is convinced the system is broken.
"Change your name, you're not for children, you should be parent protective services."
Once Logan was returned to his mother, the Edwards' legal visits were also reinstated but they can't track down their niece. The couple has re-filed for custody and is staying positive they will see their grandnephew again soon.
