The purpose of this blog is to provide updates on some of the cases I reported in my book (Fighting CPS: Guilty Until Proven Innocent of Child Protective Services Charges ISBN 9-780-9800061-6-2) that had not been resolved when the book went to press, and to report other cases where CPS is not working up to par. I’d also like to hear about cases in which Child Protective Services did the right thing so those cases can serve as examples of what should be done. Reflecting on 2013
It seems to be traditional to reflect on the year as we approach the end of December. When I look at the posts I’ve written this year, most of them are not particularly good news. If I had to give a “grade” to Child Protective Services, it would be a failing grade. But I’ve passed on just enough “good news” this year to have hope that there has been some “improvement” in agencies across the country, and I’m a glass-half-full person most of the time.
For the end of 2013, here are two bits of news: bad news/good news.
Bad: An Associated Press article appeared in the Houston Chronicle Nov. 22, 2013 (pg. A-6) hitting the highlights of a report in the state of Arizona that over a four-year period, thousands of cases of possible abuse reported to a state hot line went uninvestigated. The cases were reported as “not requiring investigations” beginning in 2009. “At least 125 of these cases have been identified in which the children subsequently became the subject of another child abuse investigation.” They have, according to the article, another 10,000 cases that have gone beyond the 60 day limit for investigation. Arizona’s governor, Jan Brewer, has made it a priority to change this so that children are not at risk. It’s likely that parents and care takers in many of these cases are not guilty. On the other hand, that’s a lot of kids whose families need SOME kind of help.
Good: In January of 2014, I’ll have some good news to pass on about a case, still on-going, in Houston. Lisa Falkenberg of the Houston Chronicle has been doing a great job getting the word out about biased judges and the results of their lack of common sense for one young girl. More on that later.
I will hold onto hope that things have gotten better for at least some families in their battle to keep, or get back, their children. Hopefully, my few words (and those who have contributed to these posts) have helped someone out there. There are days I wish I heard from more of my readers through the special email I’ve set up (frontiera.fightingcps.deborah.gmail.com) but I know it takes a lot of courage (as well as time many of us are painfully short of) to send a message or comment on a post. I promise; I do not give out email addresses of anybody who contacts me that way, because I would not want anyone to pass out my address, and I try to abide by the “Golden Rule.”
As for our own family, I’m happy to say that James is happy and healthy and doing well in second grade. I volunteer at his school (shelving books in the library) a couple days a month and have lunch with him on those days. I’m glad he’s still “young enough” to think it’s cool to have lunch with Grandma. We spend other special times together, too, including his little sister. It’s hard to believe that she is already three years old! He has a perfectly normal amount of jealousy, of course, but dearly loves his sister. Sometimes it’s funny to watch them interact with each other.
By the numbers of web sites related to fighting CPS, the new books out there and other similar indicators, I know that I am not a “lone voice” in this arena. It is good to know that others are shouting for change, too. May we all continue to fight the good fight both to rescue children who ARE abused and to save families from the trauma of having their children taken away from them. My prayer during 2014 will be that families will receive the help they need without having their children taken away from them. I will continue these posts two times a month as long as possible.
