The purpose of this blog is to provide updates on some of the cases I reported in my book (Fighting CPS: Guilty Until Proven Innocent of Child Protective Services Charges ISBN 9-780-9800061-6-2) that had not been resolved when the book went to press, and to report other cases where CPS is not working up to par. I’d also like to hear about cases in which Child Protective Services did the right thing so those cases can serve as examples of what should be done. Never Jump to Conclusions
There has been a lot in the media lately about two mothers who let their children go to the park alone. One child was 7 and the other 9. The mother of the 9 year old was reportedly working at a near-by McDonald’s and figured her son would be better off in the park than sitting around the restaurant all day. (And when did McDonald’s ever pay enough to cover food, rent, clothing, and decent summer child care?) Those are the details I remember most.
People have jumped on the media frenzy either condemning these mothers or saying government should not be getting in the parent’s business. There are strong feelings on both sides. I watched a “panel of parents” on Fox and Friends the morning of August 7, 2014. These were all New York parents, who of course agreed they would NEVER send their kids alone to a park. They were more responsible than that. The Fox News moderator asked some “why” questions. But when one man tried to say that while he wouldn’t send his kid alone to a park in the New York area, it might be different elsewhere. As he tried to continue this line of thought, the moderator kept interrupting or trying to cut him off. (They often do this on Fox where they don’t like their “guest’s” opinion.)
I’m going to toss in my opinion. First, let me emphasize that NONE of us knows all the facts of either of these cases, so we should be careful about how we generalize and judge. We are not on a jury hearing all the evidence for/against either of these mothers, who maybe shouldn’t even be in front of a jury, especially the jury of a partially-informed-media-crazed public!
This country has become a One-Size-Fits-All place when it comes to child care and that is JUST PLAIN WRONG! What is right or wrong for one family is not right or wrong for another. What is right in the city may not be right in a small town or rural area. There are a million shades of gray and every family, every childcare/neglect/irresponsible parent/parent trying case is DIFFERENT from every other.
While the world for children is now much more “dangerous” with predators out there, etc., and it is not the same world I was raised in (back in the late 50s and early 60s,where we pretty much ran around our small town on our own and every parent looked out the window from time to time) and it is not the same as it was in the 80s when my kids were able to walk around our Houston suburban neighborhood to their friends’ homes, whose parents were expecting them; or go to the pool two blocks away after age 10 when they had passed a swimming test; there are still places in this country where it IS possible to let one’s 7 or 9 year old go somewhere without the “protective drone” of a parent or the government. Some kids are responsible enough for that and have learned from their parents how to be responsible and watch out for themselves. Other kids are NOT responsible enough for this. But it should not be up to the public or the government to interfere unless they have ALL the facts about that child and that mother in hand. And NOBODY should get thrown in jail or criminally prosecuted on a “first offense” especially when nothing happened to the child except that the child had a fun day getting some exercise outside!
That’s my two cents. You, my dear readers, are entitled to yours.
