The purpose of this blog is to provide updates on some of the cases I reported in my book (Fighting CPS: Guilty Until Proven Innocent of Child Protective Services Charges ISBN 9-780-9800061-6-2) that had not been resolved when the book went to press, and to report other cases where CPS is not working up to par. I’d also like to hear about cases in which Child Protective Services did the right thing so those cases can serve as examples of what should be done. In response to finding resources for parents in crisis: help is as close as the public computer in the closest public library!
A Google search on (postpartum depression) yielded 1,480,000 results. A person could narrow it down by putting their state and county into the parentheses. A search for (support groups for ADD) yielded 118,000,000 related web sites. (FASD) which is fetal alcohol syndrome—yielded 427,000 possible web sites. A search with (crisis nurseries) showed 1,410,000 results. Again, a person could narrow the search with something like (crisis nurseries Houston Texas) or whatever city, state, or county the person searching lives in.
I followed several of these links to find sites loaded with information, 800 phone numbers, etc., etc. It isn’t that help is not out there for parents in crisis. The problem lies in people wanting to reach out for help. They may be afraid; they may think they don’t need help; they may not realize help is as close as the nearest public library. And every elementary school has a library and a computer that parents may use! But will they?
It may also be up to those around parents to see the signs of crisis and REACH OUT to those parents, offering to help them or offering to help them find help. This is where neighbors, friends, family members, teachers, school officials, nurses, doctors, faith leaders, community centers, etc. come in. They may see signs that a parent is feeling overwhelmed. But CPS should not be those people’s first call. They need to ask the parent: May I help you? Is there someone I can call for you? Did you know . . . ?
If the parent does not respond to the offer of help, and the problem continues to grow, then more of an “intervention” might be needed, and that might be calling CPS.

The problem of Child Protective agencies over-reach is not limited to the United States of America. My daughter informed me a while back that the BBC (British Broadcasting Company) has a program called Panorama and an episode aired back in January titled, “I Want My Baby Back”.
