Having only one child, I can honestly say that I don’t know what it’s like to have a seed growing inside to the point that he wiggles and squirms for me to know that he is there and then to lose that child to the clutches of death. However, a dear friend of mine recently experienced this pain. I’ve tried to call her a few times over the past month but in her grief she refuses to answer my calls.
Just yesterday, I had the privilege of speaking with her husband, who by the way is most concerned about his wife’s welfare. It seems that she has stopped going to church and has drawn herself into a tight little cocoon. In this cocoon, no one can touch her with well meaning but painful comments like, “well it must have been God’s will.” A grieving person does not want to hear these words—not yet anyway! If we’ve never experienced their pain, it’s difficult for us to minister to them. Sometimes the best thing we can do is to say nothing. Let the person know that you love and care for her—but zip it!
After lifting my friend up in prayer yesterday, God gave me an idea. I went to my computer and created a card. Not knowing what to write on the inside, I chose to place my own version of the ‘Apostle’s Creed’ a poem that I’d written years ago entitled, “I’m Confident That.” This verse is quite uplifting; filled with truths, promises and the assurance of the hope and love that we have in Christ. I wrote inside the card, “Please forgive me for not laying aside “self” before now. I do hope you enjoy my own version of the Apostle’s Creed.”
Before I even placed this card in the mailbox, I received an email through my website from a friend that I haven’t heard from in months. She was requesting that I conduct a book signing at the end of the month at the seminary where she works. I was amazed at how quickly God chose to turn the above Scripture around. The truth is he who waters others will himself be showered!
