One of my greatest passions is writing and journaling. Last year at the Baptist Men's Mission Conference these items were on display. Books written and journals with an inspirational verse inside along with a display board reflecting years of life on the mission field demanded the sightseer's attention. While I was standing there, Gaylon Moss, Director of Baptist Men Volunteerism approached me with an idea. He said, "Have you thought about perhaps making this journaling thing a ministry and leading a 'break-out session'with it?" Of course, I'd never thought of this, but I had to admit, it was a good idea. Gaylon went on to say, "Think about it. What can you tell others about journaling that would make them want to pursue the craft?"
I went back home and did just what he asked and emailed my ideas to him, however I received no response. I continued to pray about the opportunity but nothing happened.
Then, we were invited back to set up our display again the next year. I beefed-up my display a bit by adding a section concerning our newest opportunity, building 'Camp Duncan' a wilderness camp for girls in Aberdeen, N.C. The display was as bright and cheerful as last years and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to shine once again.
After attending the morning general session in the sanctuary, we broke into smaller sessions. Imagine my disappointment when I noticed that there was a journaling class offered with someone else leading. Despite my immediate distaste, I chose to attend the session. I have to admit that it was one of the best decisions I've ever made.
Very quickly, I realized that my 8 to 9 years of journaling experience paled in comparison to this woman's twenty-five years. That's right! She had twenty-five years of journaling and life stories that deeply revealed the significance of leaving behind a writing legacy for your children and grandchildren.
"Oh the power of the written word," was a comment that she used. I was totally captivated by her message delivery and thankful that God chose her to lead this session. By the way, did I tell you that there was standing room only in this first session of 'Journaling'Leaving behind a Legacy' by Phyllis Foy? That's right!
God's word says to be grateful to see His work begin so don't be discouraged if and when you are not chosen to lead the way. All things happen in His timing and so I've decided that perhaps once I've had about ten to fifteen more years of journaling experience, it will be my turn to lead. Until then I choose to be content right where God has placed me and hope you will choose to do the same.
