fond memories of a dear servant. Yesterday, December 24, 2009, we lost a great trooper of the faith as Jessie Wilson went home to be with the Lord. You may not know our friend, Jessie, but he had a wonderful servant heart. Many of our down east locals and volunteers fondly referred to him as ‘Uncle Jessie’. He and my husband traveled many a mile together serving God and others on disaster relief and recovery missions. From our early journeys to Grifton following Hurricane Floyd to our last venture in Atlantic, N.C., Jessie rode with us quite often.
One time, he and I were traveling back down to Atlantic from our homes in Waxhaw. As we neared the east coast, thick heavy fog began to surround us. My husband called to give us forewarning, however we were already in the thick of the mist by the time his call arrived. As we traveled slowly and carefully around the winding curves between Beaufort and Atlantic, the car behind me eased around us. I thought surely he’d take off once he passed us but he remained just far enough ahead to guide our way through the still unfamiliar territory. I remember saying to Jessie, “Now, isn’t that just like God to send us a light to guide us safely through this foggy night.” And he said, “it sure is.”
I trust that God has done the same for our friend during his latest journey and that he has safely arrived home from his weary travels on earth. After all, Jesus promises us in Scripture that...
