Inspiration on the value of the written word... My pastor has been teaching from the book of Revelation for what seems like an eternity now. He summed it up yesterday teaching about heaven and the importance of music therein. In his witty way, my pastor made this statement, “Three books are important to the church; the good book, the song book and the check book.” Although this statement was not in our outline, it was something that I wanted to hold on to—something that I thought I could use at some point, and so I jotted it in the sidelines of my sermon notes.
Later on that evening, I thought about his comment and eagerly opened my mouth to share it with my husband. But guess what? I’d forgotten one of the books by name. I sat on the couch anxiously naming the two that I could remember, but no matter how hard I pondered, my mind was drawing a blank. I could not recall the third book. Finally, I pounced up off the couch and said, “I’ll tell you in a minute” as I picked up my Bible and opened it to the sermon notes tucked inside. Then I shared the third book I’d forgotten so quickly and my husband smiled.
Now, the truth is that we all forget 95% of what we hear within 72 hours. In this case only 6 or 7 hours had lapsed! Hearing is probably the easiest way to get God’s word into our hearts and yet it is the quickest to lose. That’s why sermon notes are so important. I’ve learned that if you want to hold onto something that someone says, you have to write it down.
