One Writer's Random Thoughts

Sometimes people need a fresh look at something, or to lighten up a little bit, or a way to express some of those “pet peeves”, or a good tip for everyday life, or a quote that makes them think, or . . . So those are the pigeon holes this blog will attempt to fill.
At other times, I’ll use passages from some of my books to demonstrate for readers and authors how writers us various techniques to “show” a good story rather than simply “telling” it.

World Building, Part 4
Not long after my two main characters meet, Antony gets himself into trouble and is placed under what my ant world calls a “probationary contract”, one part of which involves making amends toward Henrietta. I described more of their world through short “beats” in the dialogue as Antony is forced to explain his actions to Henrietta, whom he has greatly hurt and offended:
Henrietta and Antony scurried along with the carriers in silence. The sun shone in a bright blue post-storm sky, but neither of them noticed. Henrietta only heard the tapping of pods on the path and the shifting of the carriers’ baskets. Their brisk pace brought them to the cross path in a little over an h-unit. They turned from the main trail and the carriers continued on their way. The two guards sat down and took out their water flasks.
“Have a good journey,” one of them said. “See you Seventhday.”
Henrietta found herself dragging her pods in dread. Antony finally broke the silence. “Would you like me to carry your satchel for a while?”
“I guess so.”
After they had gone about three d-units, they came to a stream, lined with stately grassfronds casting their shadows in stripes.
Antony stopped. “This is a nice spot ... pretty and shady. We might as well sit down.”
Henrietta folded her appendages under her and reclined on the ground. He positioned himself at right angles to her and lowered his antennae. Neither of them knew where to begin.
“All right,” said Henrietta. “I’m here. I’m listening.”
“You could make it easier.”
“Why should I?” she snapped. “Let’s hear this great explanation of yours that’s supposed to make everything fine again.”
“I admit, that first day I came up to you, my main goal was to get information. I had been really busy and hadn’t done my research. I didn’t know it then, but I was extremely depressed. By the third time we met, everything was different. Please, believe me. I even tried to write something different, but I hadn’t read enough to do anything. So . . . I thought . . . with over two hundred reports, they probably wouldn’t read them all anyway, and they would all sound about the same. Who would know? By Fifthday I had really begun to care about you.”
“Care about me,” she interrupted. “Taking my work is a funny way to show it.”
“I was too embarrassed to ask you. What was I going to say? ‘Henrietta, you did all the work, but can I put my name on it, too?’”
“Do you mean to say that you hadn’t done enough assignments to realize how different my ideas were?”
He hung his head. “That’s right. I didn’t realize it until you asked that question at the end of Master Diandra’s lecture.” He told her about being caught in Master Alex’s work chamber. “I was so ashamed. I couldn’t even look at you.”
