There are poetry clubs which can be very helpful to a poet starting out tho at times I have wondered if it was the same as dancing in a minefield? In your mind you feel your poems are great and then when it gets dissected by others in a room or even laughed at perhaps--I wonder how long would a person want to keep paying their dues to such a place?
Robert Frost was once asked to join a group where they would discuss each others poems and Frost said
" That sounds like a Parlour game to me. I am an Artist."
To each his own I guess. Some thrive on a group setting and still others prefer to be alone. There are no hard and fast rules when one is writing poetry. If you want to join a group and feel it would help-go for it--if you feel as I said before more like dancing in a minefield--you are not so sure you would like to be critiqued by a bunch of poets who seem perhaps to you to write with their head in the clouds and their brains on neutral, don't join.LOL
Some can write poetry of great flowery ease that it ends up making you wonder if they should open open their own flower shop?
I have never belonged to a Poetry group-I did join 3 women for an evening of Poetry-One did her poems on Nature
one on Romance and Horror
and the other on Hot Sexy Erotica--listening to 3 women talk for over 2 hours on why they Loved Poetry was a mind stretching experience for me
after that one evening I went on in the next several years to write over 800 poems
but that's just me--Be yourself
a good poetry group can be a blessing--find out from others what they like about the group and why they are members--did they become better writers and see their poems published or is it a group that doesn't want to have their poetry out in the public like in a magazine? which should make you ask--why are you here doing Poetry then? Don't you want your poetry to be heard by others? that may open up a whole range of questions
find out for yourself what works for you--what you need to be a better Poet or writer--most of all--have fun--be yourself and that is not news BUT that too is Reality.
