On Writing (Part One) 4/23/2013 5:00:57 AM
Writing out one's thoughts on paper is never as easy as it seems. Poets can use flowery words, seductive phrases that could make a pimp blush and whisper Romance that could turn on a woman's Book club. A person wiring non-fiction worries about getting the facts straight. A Fiction writer like a Poet goes deep in to their soul--their Shadow side-to places wherever their pen takes them, tho it may shock friends and family members-have them end up changing their Church Memberships and leave their spouse or Lover wondering `Who are you` To go to such a deep place can even ask one where their sanity has gone.It makes me wonder about the husband of E.L. James-she is the woman who wrote the series-50 Shades of Grey--I wonder tho about the husband--the next morning as he went off to work did he have drivers honk their horns at him with a thumbs up--did he get strange phone calls or did people ask him strange questions about his sex life-all because of a book his wife wrote--not to mention what sort of questions she got asked either.
Like a fellow sitting at his desk-struggling with the dreaded Writer`s block which in reality should be called--Fear
`What if what Ì write is not any good or if it does become successful I end up losing the respect of my friends and `family for daring to write about things they would not dare.`
Sometimes as a Poet I have learned to simply write even tho everything in me may be screaming to go do something else.A writer has a lonely life. People read a person`s poems and you can see their minds tripping over their tongues. We all have an Imagination--its what we do with it that marks writers out from others.
Here`s where my mind went one day-try and follow along:
`A man could be watching a Baseball game on television between say Boston and Detroit--its in the 9th inning and Boston is winning(was there ever any doubt)--he is sitting in his study on a chair watching it go on. The camera looks on to the crowd, to the section where he likes to sit and the camera sees a man and a woman in a heated discussion. The writer sizes the guy up as a Jerk even from his study. The woman has legs that seem to go on forever, with her dark hair, large hoop earrings, a streak of red in her hair and a short skirt. He hands her a folder and the camera zooms in and sees on it the word in bold letters DIVORCE--she mouths the words
`You__________`he smirks-hands her a pen and walks away. the TV commentators make their own comments and go back to the game. The writer knows he should stay where he is-and finish his novel but the woman seems so lonely-needing compassion-ok he is a red blooded male and we all know what he is thinking. He noticed that she had a copy of one of his books.. a wise woman to be sure. He tells himself this is crazy even as he parks his car in the stadium parking lot, in the section he hopes she will come out of. Naturally the odds are against him but like playing the Lottery or sending a manuscript to an editor its a chance he has to
take. Lucky for him he has taken his 10x50 Binoculars -he even has the book she was reading nearby.Still any writer would do the same. Lonely women need a friend-he recalls her face her short skirt and her hair. He feels like a guy waiting after school for the cheerleader to show up or the sexy female teacher he has heard about.. All of the cars are gone and he feels he may as well leave as well when a car pulls up beside him and a female voice yells at him
`Stop right there`
great he thinks--a female cop on steroids-trying to make her quota I bet
he turns and its her
`Aren`t you...
YES
they make small talk about his book-he offers his autograph for her over a coffee--she wants a stronger drink
so they end up at Clancy`s -an Irish bar in the heart of Boston( I have no idea if such a place exists--where was I...o yes...)
before the night is over he will know her history and her problems. She is a Sex Therapist and she has 2 weaknesses
A passion for writers
and a desire for New Adventures
in the back seat of her Cadillac with the smoky mirrors he ignites them both
and its where he shamelessly gets an idea for his new book which will turn out to be a Bestseller``
Are you still with me........
A writer and a Poet needs to make his stories interesting and enjoyable --not muddled with confusing words that one would need a Thesaurus to figure out. Some people like to read books like this but one`s imagination can often take you to places where you never thought you would go--like me-talking about writing and then allowing you to see how a writer`s imagination could get the best or worst of him..and that is not news BUT that too is Reality.
