Saturday in Town Memories of a Lifetime
When I was a kid Saturday was a big day for the family. We would bathe ( in a # 2 washtub!), get dressed up, and be ready to spend the day in town. First our folks would drop us off at the Rex theater, while they did whatever it was big folks did, and we enjoyed the latest shoot-um-up with Gene or Roy or Johnny Mack Brown. The best part was the continuing cliff hanger that had left us in suspense the week before. Then we were to meet our folks at Bill's Coney Island, the place that made the best hot dogs in the world and was famous for their chili and pumpkin pies. Then we would gather in the pickup on the street and watch people go by. Everyone you knew would come by eventually for a visit, as this was the day every farmer, rancher or person that was anybody came to town too! As the day was coming to a close we would go grocery shopping, Mom and Dad did the shopping while Bud and I roamed the toy and funnybook isle at the drugstore next door trying to decide how we would spend our dime. I drooled over the pirates pistols and Bud favored the six shooters. He wanted to be a cowboy, but I dreamed of sailing the seas to find buried treasure on some deserted Isle. Of course I would be dressed in all the finery and jewels before my day-dream would end. It would be dark by this time and we would head home, sleepy and content with our day in town, our new funnybook held close.
We would likely be asleep before we traveled the twenty miles home to what our Dad called the Valley Ranch. I'm sure it was a chore getting us out of our clothes and into pjs so mom could tuck us in for the night, but what memories we had of our Saturday trip to town, meetin' up with our friends, stuffing ourselves on coneys and icecream and having our treasured funnybook to read all week! Life was good!!!!
