Dirt and Sunshine 10/3/2011 2:05:11 AM
Remembering how to play! Working at my computer Sunday afternoon I spotted two of my little great grandchildren, three and five, playing in the yard. I stopped to watch them as they worked diligently moving dirt. Most of the time they are at odds with one another, but now they were working as a team. From time to time they would look at one another and giggle. I wondered what they found so funny as their hole deepened? For three and a half hours they entertained themselves. Eventually they moved from the hole to the patio bringing the dirt with them. They had it in pots where they had various twigs from the yard planted firmly in their depths, they had mounds poured onto the glass coffee table, along with cars and trucks, as they pushed and pulled them through the dirt making roads and mountians in their makebelive world.
I found myself lost in the past, remembering a couple of kids about the same age, growing up on an old dirt farm in the Texas Panhandle, doing the same thing. Happily making a pretend town among the weeds and wild grass that grew in the yard. Hour after hour working at building streets and city blocks and manuvering our cars over our handbuilt mountians and streams. We didn't need electricity, or electronic games for entertainment, we made up our own. Tin can lids became plates and moss from the horse tank was food for the table. Wildflowers adorned our pretend table. We were happy and healthy as the warm sunshine beamed down and warmed the earth around us and the wind cooled us and tangled our hair. We got dirty, but dirt washes away. Just like these children, it will be gone tomorrow, so let them play. Let us enjoy watching and remembering. Seems children are not allowed to get dirty anymore. Sometimes I think only grandparents remember what it was like to be a kid!
