Who's next? Anita’s body was not in her room. There was no indication it had ever been there. We paired up and searched the house. It was no where to be found. Going back to her room we discovered all of her things were gone. It was if she had never been there at all.
I felt numb. There was no explanation. Was this just the beginning? What was to become of us? We were all puzzled and frightened. No phone, no transportation and now one of us had disappeared into thin air.
I was exhausted. I went to my room and locked myself in. I couldn’t even begin to think of writing. I just wanted out of here. I started to pour myself a glass of tea, then thought better of it. Maybe the canned stuff would be safe to drink whether I liked it or not. I got a coke from the fridge and walked to the window. It was a spectacular view, the pines and the snowcapped-mountains beyond. I saw someone dart into the trees from the garden below. Who…? I thought it was a man. Was it one of us or a stranger? My heart was pounding.
I grabbed my coat and hurried down the stairs. I thought of asking Robin to go with me but I didn’t want to take the time to find him. I went through the dining room and out through the kitchen to the garden. I saw no one. I knew it was foolish of me to go alone but I wanted to know who and why someone was going into the woods rather than staying on the trails around the property.
This may be my chance to find out what had happened to Anita. Even though it appeared she had never been here, and someone took great pains to make it seem that way, I knew she had been and that someone had killed her and had hidden her body so we would never know for sure what had happened.
I picked up a stick from the garden. My hands were sweating; if I had stood still I am sure anyone could have heard my knees knocking.
I could see the imprints of shoes that led to the thick mound of brush. The place I saw from my window. I approached it cautiously. It was dark as I entered the forest it was very quiet. I stood still listening. I could hear my heart pounding. A slight noise and a terrible pain hit my head and all turned black.
