Careful What You Wish

The best of both worlds, the past and the present.
I am always making the remark...I wish things were like they used to be...but do I really? Back to the days when television was black and white or back when movies were silent...how about when there was no air-conditioning in cars or back even further when folks had to ride in a wagon...what if I had to milk the cow rather than run down to the jiffy and pick up a gallon of 2% and a loaf of bread while I was there instead of making bread from scratch to feed the family...and think of the convenience of stopping by the bakery and picking up some doughnuts to go with our coffee or ordering a special cake or having pizza delivered. I remember washing laundry on a Maytag washer and hanging it out on the line as it froze in your hands on a blustery winter day, but that was better than how Mom did it in a washtub with a rub-board and heating the water on an outdoor fire. I will say there was a fresh smell then that doesn’t compare to laundry now-a-days, but I’ll take my washer and dryer and drip-dry-cloths anytime to what it was like then on ironing day, I hated to iron. I couldn’t wait to buy a freezer so I could keep my sprinkled ironing in there, it worked great. When I married we lived in a tiny basement apartment, our ‘refrigerator’ was a box in the window and we bought a hunk of ice a couple of times a week. You didn’t keep much on hand and you cooked every meal...no running to McDonalds or Taco Bell to pick up something fast. The trash man drove a horse-drawn wagon down the alleys and had all kinds of treasures hanging from the side rails. Every kid wanted to be the trash man when they grew up. There was a lot of good things taking place back then, neighbors visited, folks sat out in the cool of the evenings and watched kids play kick-the-can and tag. You knew who your neighbors were and kids were free to roam the block and parents weren’t afraid for them. Iced tea and lemonade was the favorite beverage, cokes were rare. Fathers worked, mothers were home, and children were allowed to be kids and when they misbehaved they got punished. You didn’t have to worry someone was going to call CPS on you and if your teenagers got a little wild the local cops called you to come pick them up, they didn’t lock them away and give them a record to live with the rest of their lives. I guess when you get right down to it I would like the best of both worlds, the old and the new, the past and the present. How about you?
