Snowstorms 1/28/2010 7:09:13 AM
Memories of times past. Recently we had what was called a blizzard in my hometown but I have to tell you it was nothing compared to the storms we had when I was a youngster in the Texas Panhandle! Then they were literally 'white outs'. The one here a couple of weeks ago was bad, the wind blew and the snow drifted and it was bitter cold. Cars were stuck all over the place. It was unexpected and unusual for here. No one was prepared and few folks know how to drive in snow. If you didn't have a four-wheel-drive you were stuck! One of my boys told me goodbye and left, thirty minutes later he called from his cell phone to tell me he was stuck. "Where are you?" I asked. "In the driveway out front." he replied. We got a big laugh out of that although it wasn't funny. the whole city was locked down, even the snow plows and sand trucks were stuck. It was a nightmare.
But back in the old days when we had a blizzard I remember Dad tying a rope from the house to the barn so they wouldn't get lost on the way out to take care of the stock. We had sheep and they always picked the worst weather to lamb(have their babies) Mother and dad would be up all night out in the barn taking care of the new mothers and making sure the babies were okay. They had a big coal-oil stove going and it was toasty in there with all the animals and the heat from the big stove. Back then it wasn't unusual for some folks to freeze to death trapped in their cars or when they wandered away from their house and couldn't find their way back. Snow drifts would be as tall as the barn when the snow storm was over and my brother and I would bundle up and play for hours sliding from the peak of the building off into the snow banks. We would tramp back into the house half frozen. Mama would have a pan of luke warm water for us to thaw out our hands and feet. I remember how it stung and ached but as soon as we warmed up we were ready to go again. One of the joys of the snow was making snow ice-cream. A little milk and sugar and wa-la, Ice-cream!
Those were the days my friend. when I was young, oh so many years ago!
