The Crystal Compote 12/3/2007 7:50:35 AM
Christmas A crystal compote, a wooden bowl and a red paper bell, when these things came out of hiding at our house we knew it was christmas. The excitememt began. Anticipating the nuts and fruit and striped candy that was to follow was almost more than two wide eyed youngsters could stand. Everyone was so mysterious, whispering and hiding things. Smells from the kitchen were tantalizing as mama made plates of cakes and candy, fudge, divinity and a nut roll, then we all got in on the making when she invited us to butter our hands and start the taffy pull. What fun the four of us had as we tugged and stretched the golden sweet treat. Christmas Eve we put up a tree and draped it with tinsel, glass balls, and a star. The red paper Christmas bell unfurled and hung from the ceiling in the center of the room, garlands of red and green streamed to each corner. The pot bellied stove glowed as Mama read the story of Christ's birth and Daddy, Buddy and I gathered round to hear. It was a magical time as she tucked us into our bed and told us come the morning there could be a surprise if we had been good all year. As we drifted off to sleep the twinkle of the light refecting on the tree looked like angels dancing about. Rather than the gift we might find beneath the tree the activity leading to the night before Christmas was the best and the crystal compote with the striped candy, the nuts in the wooden bowl and the red Christmas bell spelled Christmas to me. I wish all of you a Magical Christmas as we celebrate the birth of Jesus in 2007.
