The Writers Ring Mysterys...page two 7/10/2007 10:40:08 AM
The suspense builds as the group looks their competition over. Everybody wants the million bucks...Who will it be? There’s a mini-fridge stocked with sandwich makings, snacks and drinks, all kinds, and a coffee pot in our rooms. After my fifth cup I am pounding away at the laptop, provided to each of us by our host, whoever that is. That is a big mystery, not one of us knows who that might be. Who would put up a million dollars and foot the bill for the seven of us to come together like this.
We’ve taken our time sizing up our competition these past two days being together. I can tell you right now I don’t know what I am doing here. These are the top of their field.
Larry, fiftyish, good looking, a friendly sort of guy, has ten best sellers of fantasy and a bunch of how too’s under his belt.
Robin, suave, good-looking, and knows it, also has some best sellers for his resume’. His books were based on folk lore, artifacts and mystery in the Indian territories.
Then there is Phyllis or Phillip, I haven’t been able to decide that one yet, but she writes a darn good book and I have read most of them.
Laura is a quiet woman in her forties. Rather mysterious. Ash blonde hair and delicate features. You can tell she doesn’t spend much time outdoors. She writes a variety of things, mystery, romance, and children’s books.
Charles is a scholarly kind of guy, pipe, tweed coat, distinguished gray at the temples. He openly studies each of us. He’s into law and lawyers and these are the main topics of his writings.
Anita’s black, friendly, great sense of humor and full of wit. She’s a little heavy but a good looking woman. She doesn’t miss a thing. Her super sleuth series is a big hit. Everybody knows who “Texas Jack” Burton is.
And then there is me…I have only written two books. My first was a western that turned into a mystery and made the best seller list and the next is yet to get there.
How I came to be on the list of the selected seven is a mystery to me. Here I am rubbing elbows with the best of the best. How can I ever measure up to these guys?
The tension is intense…everyone would like to have the million.
