from out of the past...a bit of history...a wonderful story My grandparents made the run into no-mans land in the Oklahoma territory. Grandmother told us the story of the momentous day and the excitement of it. The crowds and dust, the noise, yelling and horses tramping, children crying, people laughing and the pentup expectations of the thousands who had gathered to claim their little bit of land. My grandparents were on their honeymoon and Granddads friend and his uncle were making the run with them. Grandmother was to tend to the herd of horses, the uncle had charge of the wagon, and Grandad and his friend would make the run. Grandad had been foreman on a ranch in Kansas and knew the territory and exactly where he would stake his claim. He had given grandmother directions to the site, but when the guns went off and everyone surged forward, she lost control of her charges' and away they went with the crowd. All she could do was follow along and try to catch them. Night came upon the prairie land of Oklahoma and she had not found them yet. The horses were very important as they were all they had to start out this new life on their homestead. She felt she had failed her new husband. She didn't want to face him with out the horses. She was young, lost and afraid. Granddad found her come morning mired down in a bog along a creek bottom. To him the horses didn't matter it was his young lovely bride he needed to start out his life with. Their first home was a half dug-out with a sod roof. Their first son was born on the prairie grass there and life was good.
This will be the basis of my next short story called "Lizzie"
