Where did the summer go? 8/10/2005 6:47:10 AM
Some thoughts on time passing so quickly Have you ever noticed that the best things in life seem to speed by us? I mean, one day not too long ago I was celebrating looking forward to the kids being out of school, our much anticipated trip to Reno for the RWA National Conference, and a chance to enjoy the long, lazy days of summer.
Now, it's nearly mid August and here I am, rushing my kids back to school, lamenting the end of our huge trip across country, and trying to get ready for the busy fall schedule.
I must have blinked and missed it all.
No, actually I did have a great summer, but two months is simply not enough! Here I am, back on deadline for my next book, finishing revisions on the third book, and working on developing another, and generally obsessing about my writing career. It never, really ends, now does it?
To make matters worse, the girls are back in dance class and we're in the car about fifty percent of the time between school and activities.
Instead of focusing on all the things I have to do today, I find that I'm more inclined to sit back and reminisce about the days gone by. I mean, remember being 13 and getting kicked out of the house because your mother didn't want you sitting around watching the soaps all day? What about those awesome weekend cookouts and the chance to go swimming or fishing or camping with freinds and family? Long gone are the days when I had 'nothing to do.' I miss them.
Of course, it's easy to forget that growing up in rural Illinois that there really wasn't all that much to do, either. My kids would go absolutely stir crazy without television, video games, and movies to occupy their time.
Not that we were all that idle back then. We rode our bikes, played at the elementary school playground when we could, and gathered at the local grocery store to plot our future. Important stuff, you know. Well, it kept the boredom at bay. Mostly.
Now, life goes at lighting speed and those commercials on televison about 'life coming at you fast,' are less of a joke and more of reality. How in the world did I manage to be married 15 years? Since when did I ever think about raising teenagers and facing the big five-oh? Ick.
Still, with finally acheiving my dreams of being a writer, raising a family, and looking forward to a long, lazy retirement with my husband, I wouldn't change a thing. It's nice to reflect on that other time, but I love the freedom and accomplishments I have now. And maybe, if I try real hard, I can grab a glass of ice tea, sit back and enjoy a long afternoon reading a good book. The sun is still shining and there are some great tunes on the radio.
Maybe summer isn't so much a time as it is a state of mind. At least it is to me. Happy Reading! Pam.
