I Hope You Dance! 10/3/2006 6:57:21 AM
Adventures in life, jazz, and tap!
Hello Gentle Readers!
Wow, things have been clicking along since I last blogged!
First, I'm really on fire working on my latest project. Tentatively titled, 'The Werin,' it's a story about a secret race of humans descended from wolves and the ruthless sect of men dedicated to eradication of every wolf in the world. A historical paranormal romance, it is set in Regency London. It's so exciting that I can't wait to get it all down on the page!
One of the things I think that is really firing up my writing is that I've begun a new activity. Though I am loathe to do exercise, (meaning that I hate it with the white hot passion of a thousand burning suns), I have begun taking dance lessons.
Being an ever devoted parent, for the last five years I have faithfully transported my girls to dance class. It's expensive and time consuming, but we are rewarded with a fantastic dance recital at the end of the year and seeing my girls gain confidence, stay active at a time when a lot of children are becoming more and more lethargic, and seeing them make new friends, I have to say it has all been well worth the price in time, effort, and money.
I have a philosophy about parenting. Keep them busy and they can't get into trouble.
Imagine my surprise when their dance teacher announced that she was going to have an adult class this year. Now, I'm well over my 40th birthday, no where close to being in shape, and other than some terrible disco dancing back in the day, have never danced before.
I stink at dance although I have long admired the art and live to see 'Dancing with the Stars' whenever I get the chance. I just never thought I could or should attempt such an awesome activity.
To be honest, because we all must be--most espcially when blogging--I've always had a secret desire to dance. As a kid, I did as most young girls, and worked on my own choreography. As an adult, I am totally in awe of anyone who dances well.
So, with some encouragement from my girls' dance teacher, I said what the heck and gave it a shot.
What I got in return for 90 minutes of jumping, jiving, skipping, and tapping (badly, imho, lol!) was some of the most fun I've ever had. Although my class is made up of women my age, younger, and older, almost all of them have danced before. So, while I struggle over learning the steps, they are really hoofing it up. My teacher says not to worry, it will come.
Whether or not I become really good at it, I have to say it's been a total blast. Not only that, but I've realized that physical activity does fuel the brain. The first week I danced, I had this endorphin buzz like you wouldn't believe. The next day I wrote 25 pages in one session!
I'd like to encourage all of you, potential writers and everyone else to consider dance, ballroom dancing, clogging, ect...or perhaps some other fun sport, be it weight lifting, marathon running, softball, or whatever, to really jump in there. Fire your physical body and your creative energy--you'll be so glad you did!
That's it for now! Time to boogie, uh, I mean write! Take care and happy reading! Pam.
