Hello, Gentle readers!
I'll tell you what sort of week this is. I was at the pharmcy the other day picking a script for someone, and the pharmacist, who spent ten minutes digging through his stock to find me a diet coke that someone else found in about two seconds, apologized for the wait. I told him not to worry, it's about routine for a Monday. He said to me, "you know, I have a feeling it's going to be Monday, all week."
Sometimes, I have that feeling, too. A lot. Sitting here worrying over another contract for weeks was really bothering me, so I decided to take a chance the other day and delve into something that seems on the outside to be a little risky. A true blue historical writer, I decided to go wading in the contemporary pool Specifically, medical stories.
Since I'm a nurse, you'd think this is a no-brainer. I mean, I know all the stuff, and what I don't know is way too easy to research. In fact, compared to my historical stuff, it's a snap.
Then, you ask, what would be the problem? Well, that's easy. I work in the world of medicine. I know reality and the thought of spending my 'creative' time there is almost scary. I'm afraid I won't be able to seperate, or worse yet, it'll be so much like my 'other' job and I won't love writing any more.
Still, the check book is thin these days and I thought it was worth a try. So, last week, I started ruminating. That lead to a first chapter, then second, then a synopsis, and I'm up to 45 pages of a 200 page book. And, you know what? It's fun!
No one was as surprised as I was. So, I've also written the first chapter for a second book, and two other blurbs about two books after that. What's the best part? I can't wait to get started writing each day. It's like somebody turned on a circuit and suddenly there is electricity getting to that part of my brain.
I'm hoping to sell these stories to a category house, and I've sent them to my agent, who is more than ready to try to sell them. I know there is a slim chance of success here, but I've got to try.
And, in case you've read my historicals and you're thinking I might not continue to write them, this new venue of writing seems to have awoken the part of my brain that writes the historicals, too. I have been doing steady work on my option book as well. For now, things are working out , and like a cat and a dog that are fast friends, they shouldn't be, but they are. Go figure.
