Summer Daze 2007 6/27/2007 5:45:11 AM
It's hot, it's muggy, and it's still only June Hello Gentle Readers.
Yep. just like the summary says, it's hot. Living in Florida, one comes to expect mild winters, lots of rain, and the most oppressive summer heat imaginable. Well, this year will not dissappoint if this week has been any example.
It's only around nine in the morning, and the atmosphere outside is thick and humid and well on it's way to 90 degrees. Which is a darn good reason to stay in the a.c., if you ask me.
Which is why I'm here and not doing yardwork. As if I'd do such a thing, lol.
Growing up in Illinois and Indiana, we lived on huge properties, acres of yard and enough mowing that it would take my sore 14 year old body all darn weekend to mow. Starting from sun up on Saturday to sundown on Sunday, with only enough breaks for meals and an occasional visit to the bathroom. I remember thanking God that we had an indoor bathroom.
Yikes. Anyway, because of my terrible childhood lawn mowing experience, you will never see me outside tending the yard. Ever. I think I've only done it twice in the seventeen years I've been married.
It may be what pointed me toward writing in general and nursing in particular for my life's work. Can you say cool night shift in a big ole' air conditioned hospital?
Anyway, writing is tougher. I spent those long summer days sweating and dreaming about stories. Daydreams of me growing up and getting as far away from lawn care as I possibly could. I passed a lot of hours imaging me as an adult caring for my family, finding my true love in college, or um, walking on the decks of a starship.
Yeah, I was a total Star Trek devotee. Not any of the spin-offs mind you, the original series, which was in its first round of reruns. It came on in the afternoons around 4p.m., and from the very beginning I was entranced. Not hard to imagine when you think of being a small town teenager stuck in Nowhere, Illinois.
But I also loved reading. I think more than dreams of Star Trek, that is what saved me. I read Bradbury, Asimov, and short stories by Henry Kuttner. I also got books from my Mom by Victoria Holt and Mary Stewart. And, oh, I can still remember reading Rosemary's Baby one summer afternoon when we lived in Indiana. What a thrill that was!
I have to laugh a bit now. I have two daughters at home and one of them is deep in the Harry Potter saga and books of that ilk, and the other one is reading Stephen King. What a legacy I have passed on, huh!
Well, time for me to go. I have to take my little dogs to their groomer and do some novel writing before my day off slips away. Thanks lots for stopping by! Happy Reading! Pam.
