Where did the summer go?
Hello Gentle Readers!
Yeah, I'm finally back. I didn't mean to be gone so long, but a summer vacation camping trip and housework has eaten up my time the last few weeks. I know it's still early in the month, but school is looming in the near future and that means the end of the season. At least it does for me.
Next week my kids register for school. I had to buy scrubs for my healthcare student today. Also, I had to register them for this year's dance class. Darn, I've barely blinked and we're sliding into fall!
Now, on to the writing stuff.
Thanks to conference, summer vacation, and the much needed house cleaning this week, my writing schedule has completely gone to pot. Add to that that my husband is between assignments and has been monopolizing my office, and my laptop fried while I was on vacation last week, it means that I've not had the time or opportunity to put the first word to paper. Grrrr.
That's all about to change, though. School starting and hubby's new job are going to open my calander way up. I hope.
On the writing front: I'm still waiting to hear back from two agents I've sent material too. Both of them requested at national, and one told me it takes 90 days to process. 90 days!!! Darn. That means it'll be October before I even get an answer, let alone sending it out to editors.
Waiting is the nature of the beast. Or, I should say, hurry up and wait. If you want to be a writer, be prepared. Nothing happens over night. Nothing. And if something should, (like it did once for me...well, in two weeks, actually) it's an anomaly and will likely not happen again.
Let me tell you, waiting makes you anxious, it makes you doubt your abilities, and it makes you desperate.
The only thing to do to counter that? Keep writing. Get with your critique parnter(s) and start plotting the next book, write the next partial, or finish the manuscript. Writing is the only cure for anxiety, doubt, and desperation.
My next move? Tomorrow I have a meeting planned with my crit/plotting group. We even are planning a weekend getaway in October to plot our next books. Also, we're considering doing a workshop at National next year.
While I'm sad to see the summer dissappear, I am looking forward to getting things moving again. Meanwhile, join me in a chorus of Paul Simon's 'Slip Slidin' Away.' Until next time, Happy reading! Pam.
