W. Somerset Maugham wrote "There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are."

What a wise man he was, in addition to being a great author. I guess he knew what he was talking about. I've been writing novels for the past twelve years and each one is different -- each on a new adventure -- each one a learning tool. Being an avid reader I've seen great authors break every rule in the book -- if there were any. I have come to the conclusion that the wise folks who write all those "how to write" books don't really write -- they just know how to get published and make money. Do I want to change? No. I love what I do and I'll keep on doing it until it isn't any fun any more. What do you think?
