Fabulous Fourth 7/3/2008 6:03:43 PM
It never fails - that feeling of being a true American that comes over me on the fourth of July. I have to thank my Daddy for that. I don't think I've ever met a more enthusiastic American than my father. Born and raised in England, married to my mother in January 1930, he sailed to America in February of that year. "Don't worry, Doris, I'll send for you soon." By May that year he had a job and an apartment in New York City, a real feat since it was the middle of the dreaded Depression. But nothing stopped my Daddy from becoming the most avid American ever, not even a trip back to England with a homesick wife and a six-month old daughter (me). When we all returned three years later he was more determined than ever to live the American dream and he did. They both secured their citizenship at the very first opportunity. He officially divorced himself from everything English; he didn't even drink tea. And he and my mother enjoyed a 53 year oddesy of discovery of every monument, park, war memorial and historic landmark and along the way his two daughters were taught that being an American was not only a priviledge but a duty to stand up with pride and for everything that had made this country what it was and is.
So Happy Fourth of July Daddy, I'm sure there's an appropriate celebration in Heaven because you're there.
