Friday Night Jitters 5/13/2005 6:57:13 PM
I love living alone, now that I've had a chance to enjoy it again, but some nights....
I came home tonight, anxious to be in comfortable surroundings, glad the work week was over and the whole weekend was in front of me. When I walked in my place, everything seemed strange, the hand sewn wall hangings that I love to surround myself with looked awkward and slightly ominous, as silly as that might sound. I walked thru and made sure everything was the way I left it that morning and nothing had changed but the feel in the rooms was cold and unwelcoming. My bedroom seemed more spare and empty than it ever had before and I hurried back into the dining room, made myself some tea and tried to figure out what was wrong. Nothing had changed, the tv was quiet as it is always now that Sis is gone, bills were still on the desk to be paid, too much to hope for that to change, my few dishes from the night before were still in the sink. I finally sat down on the couch and let myself doze for awhile and when I woke up, everything seemed okay and the feeling was gone. Was I visited by spirits or did I just have a case of the Friday night jitters? Has this ever happened to you...something normal and familiar suddenly different? It was more than just a mood, I'm sure it was, there was actually a chill to the place and believe me it wasn't the air conditioner. I haven't lived alone for more than a couple of weeks in years but if this is a normal routine when you live alone, this sudden strangeness, then I'm not sure I'm going to like it. I'm glad it didn't last long and things were back to normal before bedtime, I can't even imagine going to bed with that dreary feeling surrounding me. I'm writing this down so that I remember the feeling later, when it isn't so fresh on my mind, I'll examine it again and look for rational explanations. For right now, I'm just glad the spooks are gone.
