I went to see the new version...cause I have the hots for Johnny Depp....
I'm a big fan of the original Wilder version, so I didn't expect much from this one. I'm not especially fond of Burton movies, but I could eat Johnny Depp with a spoon. He is that delicious. So I took my granddaughter, invited my grandson and his girlfriend to go and went to see the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I'm so glad I did. I will never see the whole thing the same way again. Wilder had his weird moments, when you wondered..what did he mean by that...but nothing like the slant Depp puts on Wonka. You can see so clearly that he loathes kids and parents, the expressions on his face are priceless. And this version explains his aversion, at least, it tries to, in flashbacks to his childhood and his dentist father. It was a great movie and we had a great time but a strange thing happened later that night. We stopped at Blockbuster and rented a dvd to watch together that evening and my grandson wanted to see The Life of Brian with Monty Python. I figured my granddaughter would not get much of the humor but it shouldn't be too vulgar, after all, it came out in 1979 and I saw the original and saw no reason that she shouldn't see it. Boy was I in for a surprise. Right in the middle of the movie, there is a full frontal nude scene of both Bryan and Judith, his love interest and it was such a shocker, i was speechless. Not my granddaughter. She is seven years old and she looked at me and said Grandma...that was just wrong! All I can imagine is that they somehow got the European version but I'm still surprised that it was at Blockbuster where they censor all of their videos. I saw the original Basic Instinct on a rental from Blockbuster and never understand the buzz about the scene with Sharon Stone because the Blockbuster version had it filtered out, so nothing was seen except Stone sitting in an unlady like position. I will never again be comfortable letting her watch an iffy film again. I know that Python's humor is a little out there, and sometimes there is silly violence as in The Holy Grail, but most of it goes over a kids head. I guess I should be glad that the male parts shown were in a resting state....there did I say that discreetly enough? I can just hear the questions if that weren't the case, after all she has a dad and a brother and has seen babies being changed so she isn't completely dumb about the difference in men and women but I sure don't want to be responsible for her finding out just how different we are! Anyway, if you get a chance, see the new Wonka. I'll leave the Brian movie up to you...it really is hilarious.
