Okay I insist it is just a book and a fun book at that and I am against censorship as a rule...
but this isn't about Harry Potter after all. I love to spoil my granddaughter and buying her music is one of the ways I do that, but we ran into our first problem when she was three and wanted the song "It wasn't me" by Shaggy. I heard the song and although I understood her fascination with the song, the beat and tune were just wonderful, it just made you feel like dancing, I then listened to the words...about having sex on the bathroom floor, buck naked and getting caught by his girlfriend, to which his friend offers the advice "just say it wasn't you". I was shocked myself and although my granddaughter would not understand the phrase...banging on the bathroom floor, she certainly knew the term buck naked and it wouldn't be long till she figured out the rest of it. This created a problem that lasted months, while I tried to offer her various children's versions of the song, to which she turned up her nose, and eventually she just gave up.
So now its a Gwen Stephanie song called Ain't No Hollaback Girl and she is dying to have the song. Thing is the word shit is in the song about 20 times and if I buy the censored version there won't be much else. I tell myself it could be worse, it is not that bad a word, but Kasey is only seven and i don't want her going around singing "this shit is bananas" one of the lines in the song that I just know she will pick up on cause I can't get it out of my mind after hearing the song. I didn't censor her brother, but he never showed an interest in rap music and the movies he saw, I saw with him and explained when he questioned. Kasey is a whole new ballgame. She already dances like Britney, popping around the house like a little kim wannabe and driving her dad crazy. There is no reason to believe she won't pick up on the last thing you want her to sing so what do I do. My basic instinct is no censorship...my grandma instincts is to censor the hell out of that song...
