It's pretty obvious what's been on my mind, like every other person in the country...
I'm feeling pretty selfish. As bad as I feel for the families of the people killed this week, my main urge is to call my grandson and tell him to come home where it is safe. Except that of course I can't make him safe, here or there, not if he wants to live a normal life. And as much as I want to protect him, even more I want him to live a normal life. I'm scared but I was scared after September 11 but I never considered not flying or begging my family not to. We can't live our life's dominated by fear, tragedies happen and they scare the living hell out of me, but they just can't rule our lifes. So I'm controlling myself, encouraging my grandson to go on with his plans, and hoping this is the last time a tragedy like this happens. Just a couple of months ago, his school at Rolla was locked down for most of the day when a distraught student claimed to have anthrax powder and threatened to use it against his peers, but when he was finally captured it turned out not to be what he said it was. But you can't be too careful...we sat in front of the t.v. all morning following the news, praying that Michael was okay since he wasn't answering his phone. When we finally reached him just before noon, he said he had slept thru it all, awakening only when a frat brother woke him to tell him classes were cancelled. So much for all the excitement! But that incident didn't scare me as much as this one has. Thirty people killed, all those families who had every right to believe their family was safe...heard the word of their death, maybe over the air before they were called. What a horror that would have been. No, we can't protect our loved ones from tragedy...car wrecks, tornadoes, disease, there are too many to mention and nothing could prepare one to hear that news...but shouldn't our schools at least be safe? Should. If life were only what it should be...
