Would I like to step back in time...not on your life
They asked me at work last month to do some data entry for the Operating Room, something I did 8 hours a day 25 years ago without a second thought. Damn has things ever changed. My back ached after a couple of hours, my head was ringing from the monotony, I had nightmares from some of the things I learned about surgeries...don't ask. It was a rough two weeks, I would hate to go back to that kind of work again. But are there other things I would go back to? Okay, lets think about this...what about the passion of youth...all that enthusiasm for causes I believed in. I spent more than a few uncomfortable nights during the Vietnam protests only to find that as I grew older, I regretted my actions, sorry that Vets were hurt when all they were doing was what their country asked them to do. Although I never once called a soldier a baby killer, many of the people I protested with loved the phrase and I cringe now at the pain that label must have caused young men who had just come home from a hell we can't imagine. Okay scratch that. What about sex? Would I go back to the freedom of the sixties and seventies? Not with the diseases of this time for sure. And I'm not sure I could ever accept the concept of free love again. There is nothing free about love or sex...it comes with both responsibilities and liabilities and to ignore them is to ignore the truth...never a good option. Sure, the sex was fun...but would I go back just for that...no I guess my views have changed too much to ever do that. And God knows I wouldn't go back to the pain of youth...has anything ever hurt as bad as your first love affair..whether you were 12 or 20...the pain was awesome when it ended. I guess if truth be known, I would just as well stay right here where I am, older but wiser, able to sleep good at night and if I'm not happy with the way the world is going, I don't feel it is my duty exclusively to change it or that I am capable of changing it. I do my part, try to be responsible, and for those times that I miss the passion...there is always Brad Pitt videos!
