Maybe you authors need an MBA instead of an MFA and other stuff And maybe us actors also need MBAs to make it in this dog eat dog society. Anyways you authors on Authorsden all probably know you have to MARKET MARKET MARKET to sell those darn books. You veteran authors (like Marcus) who have had your books out for a while probably understand that IT'S WHO YOU KNOW NOT NECESSARILY WHAT YOU KNOW to be successful in selling your books or in anything else. I mean I'm an actress and I've got an agent but I mean I have to pound the pavement so much talking to casting agents to get an audition that my feet hurt a lot. I guess maybe I need to go back to school and get an MBA and learn more about marketing cause Jerry my agent sure as heck isn't getting me a lot of audiitons. I sure get tired of seeing some actress who has one tenth my talent signing a big contract and being in one of those box office blockbusters. You authors probably see a little red when you see a 'bestseller' that quality wise is not even close to your book but because the 'author' has great marketing and a lot of contacts was able to 'hit the lottery.' It's probably the same thing with all these gadgets we have today like cell phones, laptops, and SUVs. It's probably not the guy WHO MAKES THE BEST ZGAGGLE THAT'S MAKING IT BIG BUT THE GUY WHO MAKES ZGAGGLES WHO HAS THE BEST MARKETING AND CONNECTIONS.
Also some of you probably remember having to knock doors when you were in school or even had to a make a living selling stuff like magazines and encyoclepedias. WELL GUESS WHAT MINGLING AND NETWORKING IS STILL PART OF THE GAME IN SELLING BOOKS (OR ACTING) SO TAKE THOSE TOASTMASTERS CLASSES AND MINGLE MINGLE MINGLE. Who knows maybe your sister's brother in law's aunt's oldest son is an editor with a big time publisher. You won't know unless you mingle.
Speaking of having an MFA I was just kidding about needing one as a writer. I mean it's nice to have but Dickens and Tolstoy and Hemingway didn't waste their time getting an MFA (But again they lived before the days of PODs and less competition). Marcus said he went to a used bookstore and the manager said she did not have any space to place 'Fifi.' So again you people need to market and mingle to sell your books.
A lot of people say I'm so crazy I'd make a good, you know ,television or radio talk host. Maybe I should give it a try. I'm just as talented and funny and educated as any of these talk show hosts you see today.
I know for a fact Kerry Krowley my rival who again has one tenth my talent but somehow is getting all these big roles hates 'walking.' She has to have a chauffeur drive her anywhere she goes. Me on the other hand I'll walk to the moon and back. I'm like that Forrest Gump fella. The Lord gave us the best portable transportation possible in our 2 legs and we need to use them as much as possible.
I went to my home in Des Moines for a few days vacation but it WAS A WORKING VACATION. MOW THAT LAWN, PULL THOSE WEEDS, CLEAN UP THE ATTIC, PAINT THE WALLS. My parents didn't have no shortage of tasks for me to do. Oh well physical work is a form of excrcise. I just hate seeing the family dog Samuel and cat Spiny just laying around the house while I'm doing all this work. Heck Spiny doesn't even chase the field mice that run outside our house. OK more than enough thoughts for now. AGAIN HOPING TO SEE YOU AT LA TIMES FESTIVAL 4/28 AND 4/29.
