I just saw Charles Dickens at Fedex Kinkos today 10/23/2007 4:06:11 PM
To separate the mindset of fame from that of everyday life What is fame? It is a perceived prestige given by our human society to separate a person or persons from the masses. I remember an episode from the comedy 'Taxi' a few years back in which the cab drivers thought they were invited to a New Years Party full of celebrities and were almost all disappointed when they found out the partygoers were just 'regular people' like they were. All the cabdrivers were dissappointed except Alex, who told them "Why should we not enjoy this party because there aren't any celebrities, why are celebrities any different? I'm gonna enjoy this party with all there regular people. The heck with those 'celebrities.'" So why should I look at 'regular people' in any different context than someone who is famous? I consider myself part of the 'working middle class.' I teach for a living. I write for a living. In reality should I or any one else who is not wealthy or famous feel different or possibly inferior to anyone who has 'made it.'I am currently typing this piece on my laptop at a local Kinkos here in the San Gabriel Valley. If I saw Charles Dickens come in thru that Kinko's door. If I saw Judy Garland come thru that door. If I saw Mozart come thru that door. If I saw Jane Austin come thru that door. ....... Should I greet them any differently than I greet the hardworking people who work at Kinkos? Should I perceive them to be any different? Of course all the characters I have mentioned have all passed but the same would apply to any famous celebrity living today. WHO WERE THESE 'CELEBRITIES' BEFORE THEY BECAME FAMOUS? THEY WERE NO DIFFERENT THAN YOU AND I. Again fame is artificial. I don't discredit anyone who becomes famous because of talent, hard work, and especially luck as a lot of you fellow writers who would like to 'make it' would agree upon. But in reality if you did become 'famous' what would it mean, say a million years from now, when the Earth could be barren and uninhabited again? Fame and also wealth are a fleeting state of mind given to some people by the artificial human society that we live in.
One more item. I saw a excellent film last night about a lawyer who defends the so called 'bad guy' called 'Terror's Advocate.' This French film talked about the life of a brilliant notorious half Vietnamese half French (Eurasian like myself) lawyer named Jacques Verges who has defended a 'rogues row' of well known terrorists and dictators the last fifty years. I just forgot about 'political correctness' and enjoyed watching this entertaining 'bio documentary' about a most fascinating individual. This little indy is far far more intellectually stimulating and entertaining than say moronic brain busters like 'The Heartbreak Kid' or 'Across the Universe.'
