A must see movie (Of course it's not American) I can actually recommend a decent must see movie in 2008 that of course comes from the land of romance, wine, cheese, and the Cannes Film festival. I'm talking about France and one reason I am so proud of my French heritage is that unlike the good old USA they still make quality movies in France. Of course I speak French fairly well and I'm thinking of saving my acorns, dusting of my passport and flying over to Paris so I can talk to some of those talented French filmakers. I can also do some shopping while I'm there even though it's so expensive with the dollar being so low. Before I talk about this movie let me explain my ratings, from best to worst, there's superb, excellent, above average, mediocre, and Double Os stinkos of the week.
Anyways the name of the film I really loved is Roman De Gare, a complex mystery murder film that will have you on your toes from beginning to end. So if there is anything your gonna do this Memorial Day Weekend, besides giving a salute to all our troops who served this country and maybe going to a local parade, then please try to see this film. It's shown at your local art house theatre, you know like the Laemmle theaters we have out here in LA. Roman De Gare, grade of superb.
A review on a few of the more 'well known' movies. I have to admit Iron Man and the new Narnia flick are halfway decent. As for the new Indiana Jones flick, it was adventuresome and entertaining but then again 65 year old Harrison running around still dodging bombs and bullets and hiding in a refrigerator to protect him from a nuclear blast? Not to mention he doesn't get radiation sickness? People in a boat falling over three huge Niagara like waterfalls in the Amazon and no one even gets scratched? An alien skull and bones made out of 'crystal' (Is there DNA in crystal?) and the same old mummies and caves you saw in the old IJ movies? Computerized army ants that move as fast as the speed of light and swallow and pull a Russian soldier (story set during the 50s and the 'Reds' replace the Nazis as the bad guys) into an anthole? A huge flying saucer spewing out huge rocks and Harrison and his girlfriend Karen Allen whose also back again (Did she make anything but IJ movies? Reminds me of actress Talia Shire who made all those Rocky and Godfather movies but what else?) son Shia LaBeauf plus fellow mad scientist John Hurt are watching these boulders amazingly fly by and again no one gets even a scratch? So the flick certainly wasn't boring but to take 'Crystal Skull' seriously......Please... a grade of mediocre.
Now let's talk about the other 2 big budget films that just came out.
Ironman, grade of above average
I mean Robert Downey goes way out of character but does a really good job playing Iron Man. I wish I could get one of those Iron Man 'flying suits' because air travel is getting outrageous because of the high fuel costs. You people realize that the airlines are gonna start charging for extra baggage? Just take a small duffel bag or two if you can but if you have a big family......
Chronicles of Narnia, Prince Caspian, grade of above average
The new Narnia film was entertaining. When it comes to well known Doubles Os English 'fantasy' flicks I'll take the Chronicles of Narnia over Harry Potter or the Lord of the Rings. I mean at least the Narnia films make a little sense. I just wonder how they made those half horse half people centaurs? Maybe there's a second person who had to play the 'horse's rear end.' I happen to know a lot of people in real life who you could describe being a 'horse's rear end.' I wonder how a male and female centaur if they really existed you know....would do it? I'd like to see two centaurs taking a puff after they did the 'act' like they did in all the old movies. Now that would be entertaining but then Narnia ia a kids show. The miracle of special effects again is involved in making those Centaurs and half bull half human 'minotaurs.' Again you see all those computer generated lions and rats and all kind of other things. You people realize that to get an Actors Union card you have to have a speaking part in a film? Well when they hired me as an extra to be part of a crowd in some cheap B film about Roman gladiators a few years ago and instead of screaming for blood I SHOUTED I AM NOT A SPECIAL EFFECT at the top of lungs and guess what? The producer and director actually liked it and amazingly not only did not fire me but keep my silly statement in the film. The movie was so bad and was kind of a spoof anyone so my silly comment only made it more entertaining. Anyways since I had a apeaking part I had to be given a union card.
One of those producer of those dumb reality shows actually came by the coffee shop where I worked and told me that he would love to have me in a reality show called the Struggling Actresses of Sherman Oaks. He told me they'd film my daily goings on(you know like all dumb reality made in the 00s do) and I would be competing against a few other lstruggling local actresses and the actress with the most vibrant personality would land a lead role in a major upcoming big budget flick. Not only that but the 'reality show' would be shown on a major network and give me uber publicity. Well it sounded to good to be true and I did some research on this fella and his production company. Turns out I couldn't find anything about him and I checked meanchecked 'Wiki' and googled all over the place and browsed several listings and guides to all the producers and directors in Hollywood at the local Samuel French bookstore. Nothing so scam or con artist or gigolo type who wanted to be friendly with him eh? Well the next time he came to the coffee shop and said would I be interested in coming to his office for an audition I told him yes but first I wanted him to try some fresh pie from the restaraunt. He said 'sure' and asked me what kind of pie die we serve. I told him we served two kinds. There was a moist lemon pie that I could smash over your head or a nice cherry pie that I could cover your face with. He just kind of stared at me a few minutes and walked out. So much for that.
Actually there is one 00s reality shows that I actually like. 'Clean House.' Omigosh seeing some of the insides of these people's houses and I thought I was sloppy. The 'cleaners' do an amazing job cleaning and renovating the place and at the end of the show these people's pigstys look like Taj Mahals. I need to get these 'Clean House' people to clean up my filthy room and inside of my truck.
Speaking of my truck I stupidly banged my rear side into a garage post and knocked some paint off. Well after an outrageous estimate of like a thousand bucks to sand and spray paint the side so the colors matched I just went to the dealer, got some 'touchup' paint and painted it myself and it almost looks brand new. Absolutely silly to throw good money away like that.
A few good old blasts from the past. "Tell me something good" by Chaka Khan and Rufus, 'Turn it Upside Down' by the late Vicky Sue Robinson and "The Hustle" by Van McCoy. I'll take any of those old disco tunes made well before I was born before anything that you hear today.
The songs and singers today are so mediocre. Hmmmmmmmm......I can sing a tune. I was in my college glee club and my high school choir. Maybe I'll visit the local recording studio out here in Hollywood and belt out a few tunes. Of course I need to write a song. I can sing but writing lyrics and notes well that's not my strength. Any of your authors den writers know how to write songs as much a write books? Marcus can you write a song?
Farewell and rest in peace to Dick Martin of 'Laugh In' and Nobel Prize winner Dr Willis Lamb. I actually took a course in Quantum Physics in college. I personally don't know anybody in Hollywood who took Quantum Physics but all you really need is a lot of luck and guts not a lot of brains to make it in Hollywood. Actually you can say that about most anybody who made it in the Business World. Personality, guts,and luck as opposed to brains. I mean look at all these top executives. Few of them studied hard science or engineering back in college, they all studied business or 'liberal arts.'
Actually instead of sing I'll go to all these local comedy clubs out here in LA and perform at their 'open mic' events. instead of being the next great actress in Hollywood I'll be the greatest comedianne. I mean wasn't Lucy Ball like a redhead and she was the best? I think I'm just as funny as any comedian or comedianne out there today. I mean when I see the comedians today I find myself crying more than laughing when I hear their stale jokes.
Omigosh I think and write so much. Way way more than enough thoughts for now.
